Jan R. Brooks September 1, 1939 – January 28, 2017

Jan passed away on January 28, 2017 at the age of 77 due to complications from ALS-FTD. She was born in Henderson, TX to her parents, Wallace and Rebecca Denby and later moved with her family to Dallas when she was 3 years old.

She graduated from Sunset High School in 1957 and attended East Texas State University and TCU where she received a teaching degree. She was a long-time teacher for Red Oak ISD teaching science to grades 4th through the 6th . Jan was married to George Brooks for 50 years until his death in 2014.

She was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years and made a number of dear friends during her time there. Jan was a free spirit, strong-willed and was always interested in a new adventure. She was a true country girl who was comfortable fishing and shooting guns. She loved animals and spending time with her friends.

She is survived by her niece, Carol Barraza and her husband Art; “aunt” Jean Hawkins; cousins, Barbara Martin Phillips of Dallas, Don Martin and his wife, Linda of Cedar Hill, Johnny Pike and his wife, Martha of Irving, Gloria Griffin of Georgetown, Billy Martin of Longview, Marilyn Martin of Kilgore, Stephen Martin of Lebanon, TN and her many friends. Special thanks are given to two favorite caregivers, Jennie Kelley and Betty Harris for their care and compassion.

Visitation is 6-8 pm, Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Jaynes Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services are 10:00 am, Thursday, February 2, at Jaynes Memorial Chapel.

Interment will follow at Laurel Land Memorial Park, Dallas, TX.
