James Licurgus “JL” Caldwell, passed away peacefully August 23, 2016 in Mansfield, Texas at age 85. Born December 18, 1930 to George R. and Minnie Alyce Caldwell in Crawford, TX, and the youngest of 5 boys.
As a youth, JL enjoyed sports and all things outdoors. He graduated from Crawford High School and attended Texas Tech after serving 4 years in Air Force during the Korean War. He met and later married the love of his life, Jean Bruce, August 13, 1955. They were blessed with 3 children; Brian, Christy and David. After moving to Denison, he worked for Texas Instruments and retired from Nabisco Brands in 1993. JL loved playing golf and attending the Colonial with his sons. He was a passionate college football fan and long-time Denison Yellow Jacket season ticket holder. JL was preceded in death by Jean in June of 1993. He later met and married Joanne Alberding and they lived in Howe, Texas until Joanne’s death in 2000. JL later met and married Joanne Dickey. They were happily married for 14 years.
He was preceded in death by Joanne Dickey Caldwell in April of 2016. Following Joanne’s death, JL resided at the Isle of Watercrest in Mansfield near his daughter. JL always had a kind word and a loving, gentle spirit which served him well as a Casa Volunteer for Grayson County. He received the Volunteer of the Year Award from Casa in 2005 for outstanding service. His other interests included his church family at Waples United Methodist, and especially the Fellowship Class. He enjoyed reading, and especially studying the sports page. He loved his little dogs, most recently Pappy.
JL was preceded in death by his mother and father, his brothers, George, Joe Frank, Billy, and Jack. JL’s family is extremely grateful for the loving care he received at the Isle during these last few months.
He is survived by his children Brian(Debbie), Christy,( Andy) and David (Heather), grandchildren; Lauren, Hilary, Cassidy, Cody, Morgan and Joshua; Jean’s sister, Bobbie Heckathorn, nieces Linda Clyma, Amy Topping, and nephew Paul Heckathorn. He is survived by his extended family of Jeff Dickey, Charles Dickey and Denise Andes. He is also survived by grandchildren; Elijah, Lilllawah, Katie, Madison, Chandler, Lindsey, Chauncey, and Fran.
