Hastings Helps the Needy Weather the Winter

With the unpredictable Texas weather, you never know when you may need a coat. Now more than 200 families have one thanks to Hastings Elementary. The school held a coat and blanket drive this winter in connection with the Dallas Mavericks and Dave and Buster’s.

The Mavs Coat and Blanket Drive is an annual collection campaign, but this is the first year that Hastings teacher Stacy Gross decided to bring it to Duncanville. She received an email from the Dallas Mavericks’ community relations coordinator, and while the campus that donated the most items stood to win a Mavs pep rally, Gross says that Hastings’ participation was mainly for the satisfaction of community service. “Our goal is to show the spirit of excellence as well as the spirit of giving. Our campus is filled with motivated and ambitious teachers and staff. Everyone here is always willing to collaborate with the members of this great community of Duncanville to ensure success for our students.”

Collecting coats and blankets for a span of four weeks, Gross sent home flyers and displayed the event on the school’s marquee. Items were then delivered to a homeless shelter in Dallas called The Bridge. “I was ecstatic and amazed with the great participation that everyone showed,” commented Gross. “Parents would comment on how their children were digging for coats and blankets to share with other children in need. You just never know how a simple coat can comfort a child at home and at school.”
