Hardin Artists Advance to State Competition

Congratulations are in order for three Hardin Intermediate sixth graders!  The artwork of Alexis Green, Emerson Lopez, and Daniela Lamelas has been voted some of the best in the state. Every year, Duncanville ISD participates in the National Association for Pupil Transportation’s School Bus Safety Week Poster Contest, which determines the illustrations used for future themes. Director of Transportation Jim Humphreys encourages all students to compete. “We’d love to see more district participation. State and national winners have a chance to win scholarship money.”

After hearing about this year’s competition, Hardin teacher Leslie Warren decided to make the poster contest a sixth grade art assignment. “I wanted my students to have the experience of planning and creating a poster,” she said. “Everyone is an artist – you just have to find what medium is your thing.” Illustrating the 2013 National School Bus Safety Week theme of “Stand Back from the Yellow and Black”, Warren’s students submitted their artwork to be judged with other entries from across the district. Green, Lopez, and Lamelas’ posters were chosen as the best and sent off to compete against artwork from other districts in Region 10. From that contest, Lamelas received First Place honors in the sixth through eighth grade division, Green was named the Second Place winner, and Lopez won Third Place.

Recognized by their teacher, principal, and the district’s Transportation Department, Hardin’s winners were presented with trophies on March 21. “I was shocked to find out that I had won over other students in grades 6-8,” said Lopez. “This was the first trophy I’ve won in the US and it’s really important,” added Lamelas. The students posters will now advance to the state competition in June, and those winners will advance on to nationals. “I am proud of all my students,” commented Warren. “Art is hard work, and when you take your time to plan and create, then all your efforts are rewarded – even if it’s just the feeling of having done a good job.”
