Gene Ray Lee, 64, avid guitarist and gifted songwriter, was called home by the Lord on September 2, 2017. He resided in Austin, Texas, the home of his beloved UT Longhorns.

Gene was born January 13, 1953, to Audie and Mary Lee in Pampa, Texas, the second of their four children. After graduation from Big Spring High School in Big Spring, Texas, he attended Howard County Junior College until he moved to Houston to begin court reporting school at McMahon College in February of 1974. While there, Gene was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Vocational and Technical Schools for his outstanding achievements as a reporting student. He became an excellent copperplate writer and court reporter extraordinaire, always willing to help both old and new reporters in any way he could.

Gene began his lengthy career in 1975 as a freelance reporter taking depositions in Austin, New Orleans, and Miami, before returning to Texas to accept the official reporter position for the 22nd Judicial District Court in Hays County. He served in this tri-county district for 28 years. Upon retiring from the court system in 2007, he continued reporting through his freelance firm, Lee Court Reporting, until his medical retirement in 2010. He was a member of the National Court Reporters Association and Texas Court Reporters Association for many years.

Gene is survived by his sister, Linda and her husband, David Langford; his brother, Dale Lee and his fiancée, Stephanie Stathakos; his sister, Mary Ann and her husband, Brett Gilbert; one niece, three nephews, many other loving relatives and friends; and his beloved dog, Booger, and cat, Kelley, his long-time companions.

Gene will be buried at Little Bethel Cemetery, Duncanville, Texas, close to his parents.

Visitation with the family will be from 5-7 p.m. at Jaynes Memorial Chapel on Sunday, September 10.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, September 11, at 10 a.m. at Little Bethel Memorial Park.
