fenderGary Denton Fender, born June 30, 1942 in Austin, Texas, died July 10, 2016 at home in Duncanville, Texas. He was preceded in death by his father James E. Fender (Marian) and mother Dorothy (Ford) Taylor.

Gary’s childhood was spent in Austin followed by a stint in Venezuela with his father’s work with Mobil Oil. Gary spent his high school years in Rye, New York graduating from Rye High School in 1960. Gary returned to Texas on a football scholarship to SMU.

A football injury during his sophomore year led to a part-time position with First Southwest Investment Bankers and the discovery of his life’s work. He assumed the position of trader with them upon his graduation from SMU in 1965. He enjoyed more than twenty years with First Southwest Company, was a member of the Dallas Securities Traders Association, as well as the National Securities Traders Association, now known as the Securities Traders Association and was awarded the prestigious position of Chairman in 1988, as one of the youngest members voted to represent the organization. He finished his highly respected career with Jefferies and Company in 2002. In addition to his professional work, Gary also served his country in the Army Reserve.

In 1967 through mutual friends from SMU, Gary met and married Mary Ellen Wilbanks of Dallas. Among Gary’s happiest times were coaching his daughters’ sports teams, family vacations to the Colorado Rockies and sharing time with his grandchildren.

Gary is survived by his wife of 48 years Mary Ellen, his daughters Michelle Elaine (Zach Stowe), Melinda Ellen Erwin Fender and Cary Estes (Robert Bonner), and five grandchildren who affectionately knew him as “Bear”: Joshua Tudor, Taylor Stowe, Davis Tudor, Nicolas Stowe, and Morgan Bonner. Gary is also survived by his sister, Marianne Buchanan, and brother, James H. Fender (Kathy).
