The Texas High School Coaches Association preseason poll is once again showing that UIL 6A District 8 is the hot bed for Texas high school football this season.

Leading the statewide poll is Allen, from District 6, but Cedar Hill and DeSoto immediately follow them in second and third place.

Allen is coming off a 16-0 record last year with a 47-16 D1 state championship win over Cypress Ranch.

Cedar Hill also claimed the D2 state title last year with a 23-20 victory over Katy and racked up in impressive 14-2 record.

DeSoto ran into the eventual state champion Allen in the area playoffs, but had an impressive showing with Allen squeaking out a 25-22 victory.

Also receiving top ten votes from District 8 was Duncanville and South Grand Prairie.

Duncanville went only 3-7 in what would be head coach Jeff Dicus’ last year in Duncanville.

Dicus was replaced this year with legendary Dallas Skyline coach Reginald Samples. Coach Samples brought five of his assistants with him to Duncanville, including both coordinators, where Skyline was 100-12 during his tenure.

DISD Athletic Director Cathy Self-Morgan said, “I am so excited that Coach Reginald Samples has accepted our head football coaching position. Coach Samples is a proven winner and brings 25 years head coaching experience making the playoffs every year at Skyline and over half the years at Lincoln. He has been there and done that. He will continue the strong character, discipline, and academic achievement that Coach Jeff Dicus brought to the program. Coach Samples will hit the ground running and will be a great fit for Duncanville Independent School District.”

Coach Samples says he believes Duncanville has untapped potential to become a top football program. He said, “I really think fans will see that the team will play hard. I don’t like to make predictions, but I will say this: We will work hard and they will see our kids are confident and they will play hard. We won’t back down from anybody.”

Duncanville’s first test will be against Arlington High School on August 28 in a non-district matchup. The game will be played at Maverick Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington at 7:30PM.
