Northwood’s Alex Adams, who heaved the shot 61’7″ to place second at the 2013 NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships, has been named an All-American.

Adams’ throw placed him just behind first place finisher Willy Irin of Oregon’s Concordia University.

Honors were given to the top eight individuals from each event that competed at the 28th annual NAIA National Championships held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, not far from Cleveland.

“Alex had his best meet of the year,” commented Northwood head track coach Rick Watkins.  “All you can ask of an athlete is to bring their best to the national championships.  He was in the lead for most of the day, actually improving on each of his throws throughout the competition, which is very impressive.  The winner just got off 1 big throw, which is all it takes, pushing Alex to 2nd.”

When asked about his performance, Adams said, “It did not go exactly how I would have liked it to go, but I was able to throw a personal best for indoor on my last throw of the meet.  All in all, it was a fun meet.”

Coach Watkins said, “There is absolutely no shame in getting 2nd at the National Meet, but I know Alex was not and is not happy with that.”

Coach Watkins continued saying.  “He doesn’t like to lose, and is very motivated to work toward the Outdoor Nationals.  As a Coach, you love that, and you want everyone to have that attitude.  We are extremely proud of the way Alex competed, and represented Northwood.”

Adams and the Northwood team are now entering the outdoor track and field competition and are working towards qualifying for the 2013 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championship to be held May 23-25 at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana.
