Extra Base Hits Propel Patriots to Win

For six innings, the story of Friday afternoon at Horner Ballpark was the right arm of Patriot starter Cy Sneed. By the ninth, most of the talk was of two homeruns from Duncan McAlpine, a go-ahead solo homerun off the bat of Boomer Collins, and a two-run double from Austin Listi. Combine that with 2.2 innings of relief from Michael Smith that saw him set the all-time DBU appearance record and, in the end, you had a Dallas Baptist (16-11, 4-1) win over Sacramento State, 6-3.

www.mySneed was outstanding in his start and, with the help of a McAlpine two-run homer in the first, kept DBU ahead most of the game, 2-1. In the seventh – as the Patriots struggled to secure hits off Sacramento State (13-13, 2-3) starter, Brennan Leitao – Sneed ran into trouble and gave way to Smith after throwing 6.1 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. At the time, DBU trailed 3-2 and Smith pitched out of a jam in his first inning of work, recording the final two outs of the inning without allowing another run.

That’s where the tide would turn for DBU. McAlpine opened the bottom of the seventh with his second homerun of the day, a no-doubter to left field. Smith twirled another scoreless inning in the eighth to get the Patriot bats back to the plate and they responded in a big way. With one out, Collins hit a lined shot over the wall in left field to give back the lead to DBU. McAlpine followed with a single as did Ronnie Mitchell for his second hit of the game. With two on and two out, Listi lifted a high fly ball to straightaway centerfield that just missed going over the 20-foot batter’s eye by a couple of inches. That shot would score McAlpine and Mitchell and give DBU a 6-3 lead.

That’s the way the game would stay as Smith picked up his fourth win of the season – but not without having to pitch around a threat in the ninth. DBU secured its second straight WAC series and won its fourth straight game with the victory and Smith cemented his place in the DBU record books. The Patriots will look for the sweep on Saturday morning with an 11:30 am first pitch. Cody Beam will take the ball for DBU and the Patriot Pregame Show will start at 11:05 am on dbupatriots.com/showcase.
