Early Mistakes Cost Duncanville

Early mistakes and a fast start by Colleyville Heritage put Duncanville in a hole that it tried to climb out of all night long.

The first play of the scrimmage for the Duncanville lead to a fumble recovery on the Duncanville 21. Cody Thomas and the Colleyville Heritage Panthers used a no-huddle offense that got Duncanville on its heels.  Back-to-back offside penalties against Duncanville kept the drive going and Thomas scored on a 4-yard keeper up the middle with 10:31 remaining in the first. Israel Deplaza kicked the PAT and the score was 7-0 Colleyville.

In the following Duncanville series, back-to-back penalties, illegal shift and illegal forward pass, killed the drive and Duncanville was forced to punt.

Colleyville Heritage came out fast again and on the third play of the drive, Cody Thomas completed a 35-yard pass to Grant Newell for the second touchdown of the evening. Deplaza made the PAT and Colleyville Heritage lead 14-0 with 7:19 remaining in the first.

Duncanville then took over the ball on their own 20 and began a sustained drive that saw two fourth down conversions.  The first game on a Deandre Grimes pass to Jaquan Cole and the second on a fourth and four from the 49 when the two hooked up again for a 27 yard pass completion.  Duncanville drove down to the 8-yard line and the drive stalled.  On a 15-yard field goal attempt, the snap was bobbled by the holder and Hector Sifuentes’ kick went wide right.

Colleyville Heritage took over on their own twenty and two plays later Cody Thomas hit Daniel Farrington for 21-yard touchdown completion.  Israel Deplaza’s kick made it 21-0 with 36 seconds left in the first quarter.

Duncanville took the ball on the 20-yard line after a touchback and began to drive the ball.   Jaquan Cole led the Panther charge and scored with 8:14 remaining in the second quarter on an 18-yard run.  With Fuentes’ PAT, the score was 21-7.

The Duncanville defense created fumble on the second play of the Colleyville drive and recovered on their own 32. But after a short drive, Duncanville’s luck on fourth down conversions ran out when Grimes couldn’t pick up the needed two yard.

An interception of a Grimes pass by Colten Gober effectively closed out the half and Colleyville Heritage took a 21-7 lead to the locker room.

The Duncanville defense came out strong had held Colleyville to four and out, but the returner muffed the punt and the Heritage Panthers recovered on their own 44.

Heritage took the ball and drove down the field, Conner Davis scored on a 4-yard run, and with Deplaza’s PAT, Colleyville Heritage sat on a 28-7 lead.

But the Duncanville offense wasn’t finished yet.  After taking the kickoff back to their own 28, they took only five plays before Jaquan Cole took in a 3-yard run over the right side for a touchdown.  Sifuentes’ kick made the score 28-14 with 5:25 remaining in the third.

The Duncanville defense stepped up again and stuffed a run by Cody Thomas, sacked Thomas for a 5-yard loss.  The Collyeville Heritage punt hit the blockers and recovered the Duncanville recovered the ball on the Heritage 22 yard line.

Eight plays later, aided by a Grimes to William Jackson 17-yard pass, Grimes hooked up with Aaron Piper for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 1:51 remaining in the third.

The ensuing Heritage drive finally stalled on their 43-yard line and their punt rolled dead on the Duncanville 15.

When Duncanville started their drive with 11:45 remaining in the fourth, the Heritage defense looked tired and Jaquan Cole took advantage of it.  Running on four straight plays, he converted two first downs and covered 17-yards.  Duncanville drove the ball down to the 21 when Grimes’ pass was intercepted by Ian Coulter.

On the next play, Heritage called a roll right halfback pass by Connor Davis and he was intercepted by Duncanville’s Gary Lewis on the Panther 20.

With 7:37 remaining on the clock, Duncanville began its march to tie the game. After an 18 yard run by Grimes on what appeared to be a busted play, Aaron Piper ran an 11-yard reverse.  On fourth and eight on the Colleyville Heritage eleven Thomas attempt a pass to the corner of the end zone to Piper, but Piper was overthrown and Heritage took over on downs.

Heritage took 6 plays to run out the clock and secure the win.
