Duncanville Tops Cedar Hill In Overtime

Duncanville and Cedar Hill football is always exciting. Both teams had already qualified for the playoffs, and bragging rights were the only thing on the line. However, with these two teams and the rivalry between them, bragging rights are all that is needed.

KXTA showed this game on tape delay as their game of the week, and I don’t think they were disappointed in the game they got.

Duncanville won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Panthers had a special captain at the center of the field. Executive Principal Mike Chrietzberg, who will is transitioning from Principal of DHS to Chief of Staff effective in the fall of 2012, assisted in the coin toss and received a game ball signed by the 2011 Panthers.

Cedar Hill took the opening kickoff and returned it to the Cedar Hill forty-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Damion Hobbs kept the ball and ran up the middle for fifty-eight yards to the Duncanville 6. On the next play, Cedar Hill was penalized for holding and the ball was moved back to the fifteen. Laquvionte Gonzalez ran over the left side and was met by the defensive line for a gain of two yards. Jared Rayford carried the ball on the next second and goal for thirteen yards and a Longhorn touchdown. Ryan Sparkman added the PAT and the score was 0-7 with 10:55 remaining in the first quarter.

On the kickoff, William Jackson caught the ball at the twenty-three and returned it to the Duncanville thirty-six. On first down Deandre Grimes rushed left for sixteen yards, and then up the middle for twenty-eight. Grimes hit Terry Cooper for eight yards and moved the ball into the Cedar Hill red zone at the twenty. On second and two, Grimes rushed for five yards and to the seven. Jaquan Cole carried the ball into the end zone on a nice run over the left. Hector Sifuentes’ kick was good and Duncanville answered to make the score 7-7 with 9:31 remaining in the first.

Cedar Hill’s next drive took almost five minutes and fifteen plays. Sifuentes’ kickoff was returned out to the Longhorn thirty-two. Rayford ran left for fifteen yards and then went up the middle for six, where he was tackled by Ghafona Iduwe at the Panther forty-seven. Gonzalez went for twelve over the right, and Rayford for another nine up the middle. Hobbs, then rushed for fourteen yards on the next two plays to take the ball to the Panther 12. On second and five, Andre Anderson rushed for six to put Cedar Hill on the one-yard line. On second and goal, Duncanville was penalized for offside, on the next play the Longhorns were called for a false start, and the ball was moved back to the six, still at second and goal. Hobbs rushed for four yards up the middle, but on the next play when Rayford tried to go right, he was thrown for a two-yard loss and bringing up a fourth down. The Longhorns coaching staff decided to go for it, and they were rewarded with a touchdown. Hobbs pass was complete to Brandon Harris for a four-yard touchdown. Sparkman’s PAT made the score 7-14 with 4:33 remaining in the first quarter.

On the kickoff, Jackson returned the ball to the twenty-five of Duncanville, and on first down Cole took off up the middle for thirty yards and first down at the Longhorn 45. Grimes threw to Jeff Thomas for four yards on swing pass to the right, and on second down Grimes went for fifteen over the left. Cole took the ball on first down, but was thrown for a two-yard loss to the Cedar Hill twenty-nine. On second and twelve Grimes’ pass to Cole fell incomplete, but on third and twelve from the Longhorn twenty-eight Grimes hit Cooper for a twenty-eight yard touchdown pass. The PAT by Sifuentes was good and Duncanville had tied the score at 14-14 with 2:36 remaining in the first.

However, the scoring wasn’t finished yet for the first quarter. Sifuentes’ kickoff went to Gonzalez at the Longhorn twenty-four and he was met by Art Zapata who took him down at the twenty-five. Hobbs completed a twenty-yard pass to fullback Anthony Stephens over the right to take the ball to the Longhorn forty-six. Hobbs then kept the ball, running up the middle for eleven and on first at ten at the Duncanville thirty-seven, Hobbs gave it Gonzalez for a thirty-four yard run to the Panther four-yard line. Hobbs kept the ball and ran to the Duncanville one, and from there Rayford went up the middle for a Longhorn touchdown. The PAT by Sparkman was good, and the score was 14-21 in favor of the Longhorns, with thirty-one seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Jackson took Jack Bryant’s kick at the twenty-seven and returned it six yards to the thirty-three. From there the Panthers started an eleven-play drive. Cole rushed four yards up the middle to end the first quarter with Cedar Hill leading 14-21.

On the first play of the second, Grimes hit Jeff Thomas for a five-yard pass in the right flats to bring up third and one. Jackson rushed for eight yards up the middle, and broke left to take the ball to the fifty-yard line. Grimes’ pass to Piper on first down was incomplete, and on second down Jackson went ran for five yards and then Grimes hit Cooper on a swing pass to the right flats for seven yards and a first down. Grimes went back to Thomas on first down for thirty-four yard pass to put the ball at the Cedar Hill four-yard line. Grimes rushed for two yards up the middle, and then Jackson went up the middle, but Duncanville was called for holding and the ball was moved the twelve for second and goal, but Grimes wasn’t bothered by the call as he scrambled for twelve yards and a Panther touchdown. Sifuentes’ PAT tied the score 21-21 with nine minutes remaining in the half.

Sifuentes’ kickoff went to Evan Williams at the thirty-two, and Williams was tackled by Malcolm McKenney at the thirty-four. Rayford rushed up the middle up the middle to the thirty-six and four yards before being brought down by Del Washington.  Gonzales ran for six yards on second down to bring up third and one, but Hobbs went up the middle for three and a first down.  Hobbs ran a sweep left for eight yards, but on second down his pass to Shelton Jones was incomplete. ON third and two, Hobbs ran for fourteen yard up the middle before being brought down by Cordray Love. Williams ran for another fourteen over the left to take the ball to the Panther 18. Hobbs’ completed a six-yard pass to Travis Wilson and Gonzalez rushed for two yards to take the ball to the Duncanville 10 and bring up third and two. Rayford tried to go up the middle, but was thrown for a two-yard loss. With fourth and four from the Duncanville 12, Hobbs completed a pass to the right to Brandon Harris for a Longhorn touchdown. Sparkman’s PAT was good and Cedar Hill led again 21-28.

With 3:44 left in the first half, Cole took the kickoff at the Panther twenty-seven, and returned the ball to the Duncanville forty-six, but a personal foul on the Panthers moved the ball back to the thirty-one. On first down, Cole rushed for twenty yards over the left, and then tried to go up the middle, but was held for no gain. Grimes rushed for twelve yards on second down to move the ball to the Longhorn thirty-seven and a first down. Cole went up the middle and broke left on a nice run for fifteen yards to the twenty-two. Grimes then went left for nine yards, and Cole went right for five to make it first and ten at the Longhorn 13. Cole ran again to the right for five, and Grimes went up the middle for another yard to bring make it second down and goal at the Longhorn seven-yard line. Grimes connected with Thomas for a seven-yard pass and a touchdown. Sifuentes added the extra point and it was all tied at 28-28 with forty-three seconds remaining in the half.

Sifuentes’ kickoff was taken by Williams and was brought out to the thirty-one where Williams was taken down by Zapata. Hobbs went back to pass, but was sacked by Iduwe for a one-yard loss to close out the first half.

Both teams went to the locker room having scored twenty-eight points each and both teams looking to come back out and keep the scoring going in the second half.

Duncanville started the second half with the ball, and Grimes promptly ran right for thirty-four yards and into Longhorn territory at the thirty-three yard line. Grimes then rushed the ball on the next three plays for a total of six yards. On fourth and six at the Cedar Hill twenty-nine, Grimes was sacked for a six-yard loss and Cedar Hill took over on downs at their own thirty-eight.
Gonzalez ran left for eight yards before being tackled by Iduwe. On second down Hobbs was sacked by Junior Cornelius Henderson for an eight-yard loss. On third down Cedar Hill tried to get tricky when Andre Anderson lined up split right, took the ball on a reverse, and looked to pass, but the receiver was covered and with defenders closing in, Anderson threw the ball away to force a punt on fourth down.It looked like Duncanville might have lost their edge when they failed to score on that drive, but the Duncanville defense stood strong and forced Cedar Hill into a four downs and out.

The Duncanville offense looked to capitalize and they did, taking only five plays to hit pay dirt. On first and ten from the Panther thirty-seven, Grimes went twenty-three yards over the right and Cole followed up by going left for nine yards, and then two yards to make it first and ten at the Longhorn twenty-nine. Grimes pass to Art Zapata was broken up, and Duncanville was flagged an illegal shift to move them back five yards and bring up second and fifteen. But once again, Grimes turned the negative play into a positive with a thirty-four yard strike to Jeff Thomas for a touchdown. With a Sifuentes PAT, the score stood 35-28 for Duncanville with 6:05 remaining in the third quarter.

The Longhorns started the drive on their own forty-yard line, but a Hobbs run play for minus three years, and two incomplete passes gave the Duncanville defense their second consecutive four and out with a Sparkman punt to the Duncanville twenty-three with 4:59 remaining in the third.

Duncanville started on their own twenty-eight and Jackson was thrown for a five-yard loss, but Grimes’ took off for seventy-seven yards and a touchdown. The Sifuentes kick was good and Duncanville had a two-touchdown lead at 42-28 with 4:59 remaining in the third.

onghorn’s turn to stop the Panthers, and two Cole rushes totaling two yards closed out the third quarter before an incomplete pass by Grimes forced an Zapata punt with fourth and three at the Duncanville twenty-seven with 10:59 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The remainder of the fourth quarter was fast and furious with both teams racking up the yardage and the points.

The Longhorn drive started on their own forty-two after the punt. Gonzalez ran for two yards up the middle where he was tackled by Blair, and Hobbs completed a pass for eleven yards to Anderson who was tackled by Tyler Mitchell. Rayford ran right, but was stopped after two yaOn their next possession, Cedar Hill faired a little better than their previous two possessions, but not much. Starting at their own twenty-four, Rayford rushed up the middle for three yards, and Hobbs went for ten up the middle for ten. On first and ten Hobb’s pass was incomplete, and then Hobbs hit Anderson for a five yard gain. On third and five Hobb’s was sacked for a twelve yard loss by Iduwe and Hobb’s dropped the ball, but it was recovered by Cedar Hill. The Longhorns were forced to punt, and the ball was downed at the Duncanville twenty-yard line.

This time is the Lrds by Blair. On second and eight Shelton Jones rushed for twenty-three yards to the Duncanville 20. Hobbs then went up the middle for twenty yards and the Longhorn touchdown. Sparkman’s PAT made the score 42-35 Duncanville with 8:45 remaining in regulation.

Duncanville returned the kickoff to the Cedar Hill 40, where Grimes completed a pass to the right flats to Jeff Thomas for eight yards, and the Grimes ran right for thirteen yards. On first down at the Longhorn nineteen, Grimes pass to Cooper was incomplete and on second down Cole ran left for five yards. Duncanville was penalized on the next play for a false start, but Grimes hooked up with Cooper on third and ten for a nineteen-yard touchdown pass. Sifuentes’ kick was good and the Panthers had a two touchdown lead again with the score 49-35.

But Cedar Hill only needed three plays to close the gap. Starting their drive on the Duncanville twenty-eight after a great kickoff return, Hobbs rushed for three yards before being tackled by Love. On second and seven Hobbs’ pass to Jalon Gentry was good for fifteen yards down to the Duncanville 10 where he was tackled by Blair. Rayford then rushed left for the ten yards and the Longhorn touchdown to make the score 49-41 for the Panthers after Sparkman’s PAT was no good.

With 6:33 remaining, the Panthers were looking to run some time off the clock when Jackson took off up the middle from the Panther thirty-two and found a lane all the way to the end zone, but a holding penalty brought the ball back and it was now first and twenty from the Panther twenty-two. Grimes hit Cooper over the right for five yards, but a Jackson rush for minus two-yards and an incomplete pass to Cooper and Zapata was punting again.

The Longhorns got the ball at the fifty-yard line with 4:37 remaining in the fourth and Duncanville leading 49-41.  Gonzales rushed right on a sweep for thirteen yards, and Rayford rushed for another thirteen up the middle. Gonzales went over the left, but was tackled by Iduwe after a ten-yard gain. Hobbs hit Gonzalez for eight yard going to the right to take the ball to the Panther 6 where Rayford rushed for the final six yards by going to the right. Hobbs completed a pass to Adonis Smith for the two-point conversion to tie the score up 49-49.

The Duncanville offense failed to get a first down on their next set of downs. Starting from their own twenty-eight, Jackson ran for four yards, and Cole ran for one. On third down, Grimes’ pass fell incomplete and Zapata hit a thirty-one yard punt to the Cedar Hill thirty-six.

With 1:54 remaining in regulation, Cedar Hill started their drive with a twenty-yard run up the middle by Hobbs. From the Duncanville forty-four Hobbs passed to Harris for five yards and hit Anderson to left on a slant pass for ten yards before being tackled by Blair. Hobbs then tried to go to Gentry, but the pass was incomplete. Rayford rushed for twenty-seven yards by going right to take the ball down to the Duncanville two-yard line with 0:35 remaining. On first down, Hobbs rushed for one yard, and then spiked the ball to stop the clock. On third down from the one Rayford was stopped at the line for no gain and time ran out on the clock with the score tied 49-49.

Duncanville got the ball first in overtime. Starting at their own twenty-five, Grimes rushed for a loss of one to the left. Cole ran up the middle for nine yards, and Grimes rushed up the middle for two and the first down. Cole then took the ball and barreled his way over the goal line.  With the Sifuentes kick, Duncanville led 56-49.

Cedar Hill got the ball next on their own twenty-five and needed only two plays to score. Rayford rushed right for twenty and Gonzalez went up the middle for five yards and the touchdown.  Cedar Hill called a timeout to discuss their options and decided to go for two.  Hobbs took the snap and rolled right, but his pass was broken up to secure the win for Duncanville.

Duncanville is scheduled to face Euless Trinity next Friday night at Irving Schools Stadium in Bi-District action.
