Duncanville Pantherettes Roll Over Southlake Carroll 71-26 in Bi-District Playoffs

The Pantherettes entered the bi-district playoffs against the Southlake Carroll Lady Dragons and rolled to a 71-26 victory and moved to a perfect 33-0 season record.

At the start of the game it was apparent that the Pantherettes were suffering from a little “ring rust” after not being able to schedule a tune-up game during their down week.

The Lady Dragons scored first and held the lead until just over four minutes remained in the first quarter, when Duncanville took a 6-5 lead and never trailed again.

Southlake was trailing 18-10 with the period coming to an end when Carroll’s Priscilla Smeenge was fouled taking a 3-point shot and was unable to convert any of the three free throw attempts.

The Duncanville defense would go on to hold the Lady Dragons to single-digit scoring in each of the final three quarters on the game.

Sophomore guard Zarielle Green with 23 points led the Pantherettes, and senior post and Louisville commit Ciera Johnson scored 18 points on the night.

Key defensive plays and rebounds by Tae Davis, Madison Townley, and Nina Alvarez kept the Lady Dragons on their heels most of the game.

By the fourth quarter the conditioning of the Pantherettes took its toll on Southlake as frustration and fatigue led to sloppy play by the Lady Dragons. The Pantherettes took advantage of every opportunity to force a turnover for an easy bucket to outscore Carroll 21-4 in the final period.

Southlake was led by Anna Hurlburt’s 14 points, but only three other Lady Dragons scored in the game.

Next up for the Pantherettes is Flower Mound on Friday, Feb. 19, at L.D. Bell for the area game. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. and L.D. Bell is located at 1601 Brown Trail in Hurst.

Flower Mound defeated Denton Guyer 70-55 on Tuesday night to advance. Flower Mound is led by 6’4” Baylor signee Lauren Cox. Cox is rated as the nationally top player in the 2016 class on ESPN’s HoopGurlz Top 100 rankings. Duncanville’s Ciera Johnson is ranked #15 for 2016, and Zarielle Green is ranked #14 in the poll’s Terrific 25 for the class of 2018.

Flower Mound comes into the game with a 23-6 season record and finished third in district 6-6A behind Plano West and Plano.
