The Duncanville Fieldhouse staff is pleased to be selected as this year’s tournament location for the Dallas Junior Wheelchair Mavericks Home Tournament for youth wheelchair basketball.

The Dallas Junior Maverick Tournament will be held Saturday, January 7 from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and through Sunday, January 8 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Duncanville Fieldhouse, located at 1700 S. Main Street in Duncanville.

For the first time the Dallas Junior Mavericks will host their tournament in Duncanville. Elaine Parham, an event organizer with the Dallas Junior Mavericks said the Fieldhouse was the perfect location for the tournament.

“This year, we were looking for a venue that was more accessible, more spacious for our tournament. The Duncanville Fieldhouse far exceeds any place where we have hosted the event previously. It is easy to locate along the highway, and it has a large gym where we will be able to utilize multiple basketball courts,” said Parham.

With 8 teams participating in the tournament from as far away as Denver, Kansas City, Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Houston, Parham noted that the additional space is just what their growing, competitive tournament needs.

This annual tournament is part of a series of competitive wheelchair basketball tournaments for youth ages 5-18 that culminates with a National tournament, which will be held this year in Colorado Springs, Colo. This weekend’s tournament will consist of 17 games over the two days.

“The tournaments are great for the players as it provides them with an opportunity to play a sport competitively like their able-body peers and learn teamwork and discipline,” said Parham. “Additionally, we have some players that have gone on to play wheelchair basketball in college.”

The Dallas Junior Mavericks Home Tournament is open to the public. And, the Dallas Junior Mavericks are “always accepting new players,” added Parham.

“We have open practices on Saturdays and provide game chairs for prospective players to try as well as a chance to meet our wonderful coaches JT Terry, Michelle Torino and James Patin who volunteer and give their time and expertise,” said Parham. “All are invited to the tournament and those that might be interested in playing are invited to come watch a game and talk with players and parents.”

Shane Gravens, Duncanville Parks and Recreation Director, said he is very pleased that the Dallas Junior Mavericks chose Duncanville as the site for their tournament.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase our facility to numerous sports organizations and spectators as well as support such a great athletic event,” said Gravens.
