Pantherette Head Coach Cathy Self-Morgan captures career win number 1100.

Duncanville is used to playing in the State Championship game. This was the 25th all-time appearance for the Duncanville Pantherettes in the state playoffs.

The one thing that the Pantherettes are not used to is having to play in a close game, much less actually trailing.

Cy Ranch went on an 11-0 run that started as the first period was winding down, and it finally ended six minutes later at the 5:53 mark of the second. With the Pantherettes trailing 21-12, Zarielle Green hit a 3-pointer to start the comeback and to lead 33-31 at the half.

“We talked about how we were in a good place right now,” said Coach Cathy Self-Morgan when asked about addressing her team at halftime. “We were in better shape and just needed to play with high energy.”

Aniya Thomas came out on fire in the third period and scored 14 of her 19 points in the third period to help Duncanville take a 57-49 lead going into the final period.

Duncanville continued their pressure defense to further frustrate the Lady Mustangs. Starr Jacobs and Green scored 15 of the Pantherettes 19 points in the final period to take the championship and give coach Self-Morgan her 1100th career win.

When asked about the wins, she said she remembers the losses more than the wins, but she did acknowledge that number 1100 was special as it happened at the state tournament as the Pantherettes claimed the 2017 6A State Championship.

The 6A Championship Game Most Valuable Player award went to Zarielle Green. The remainder of the tournament awards will be announced on Sunday.

Cy Ranch’s Ariana Whitfield led all scorers with 32 points. DiDi Richards was the only other Lady Mustang in double-digits with 16 points.

For Duncanville, Green’s 25 points led the Pantherettes, followed by Aniya Thomas’ 19 points and Starr Jacobs with 17 points. Starr Jacobs also hit another double-double by pulling down 11 rebounds.

The Pantherettes will arrive back at Duncanville High School at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Photos from the game will be uploaded soon.
