Nine student athletes from Duncanville High School signed letters of intent to play football next year in college. Marcel Southall – a defensive tackle for the Panthers – was the Panthers’ most highly sought-after player with multiple offers including The University of Oklahoma, The University of Miami, Baylor University and Texas Christian University. Southall waited until Wednesday morning to announce he plans to attend the University of Texas, Austin next year.

Eight of Southall’s teammates also signed Wednesday. Three of them will go to Division I schools: Jaron Bryant – California State University, Fresno, John Allen – Grambling State University, and Jaquel Pierce – Texas State University.

Five other DHS students signed with smaller school. Bailey Phillips will attend Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Michael Myers signed with the University of Texas – Permian Basin, and Markey Archer committed to Trinity Valley Junior College.

Duncanville High School Football Head Coach Reginald Samples said it has been a busy time with recruiters pursuing his players. Most have spent recent weekends visiting college campuses and meeting with prospective coaches.

“I just offer the young men advice, they have to live through it,” Samples said.  “I try not to sway them in any direction. The worst thing they can do is make a decision on something you say and they blame you for the rest of their lives.”

Coach Samples said a handful of other DHS student athletes are still in negotiations with colleges and could sign later.
