The DHS Band and High Hats first wowed the judges at the UIL Region 20 Marching Contest, held October 20 in Panther Stadium.  Then they marched into the UIL Area C Contest on October 27 in Mesquite, where their Superior ranking qualified them to advance to the State Marching Contest.  This year, DHS competed with 21 others bands at Area, and was one of only four bands selected to represent Area C at State.  The DHS Band and High Hats will march in the state prelims at 11:00 am on Thursday, November 6 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

This year’s success continues a long tradition of excellence.  The DHS Band has advanced to the state competition every year in which it has been eligible since 1979, and has advanced to finals competition each time since 1988.  This year, 38 bands will compete in the State Marching Contest, with ten bands vying for the state title in the finals.

Duncanville Director of Bands Jeff King is proud of his students’ hard work, and believes it will serve them well in the coming competition.  “All of the directors are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our students this whole season, and the determination and focus they displayed this past weekend.”  This week, King says his practices focused on “cleaning” sets, the individual formations formed by marchers during the show, and refining individual execution and overall musical performance.

It will take eight charter buses, an 18-wheeler, and a pick-up truck to haul the 364 band members and their instruments and equipment to San Antonio.  The band directors encourage parents and community members to come and support these students, and the DHS Band Boosters is looking into renting a charter bus for fans.  The caravan is scheduled to leave for San Antonio on Monday, November 5.  For more information about the state competition, click here.
