DBU Volleyball Roars Past Newman in Straight Sets

An efficient offensive attack and a stifling defense led the Lady Patriots Volleyball Team (8-3, 4-0) to their seventh straight win and kept them atop the Heartland Conference standings as they swept the Newman University Jets (3-6, 1-2) at home Thursday night: 25-19, 25-13 and 25-20. Kristin Secord led the hit parade with 12 kills (.458 hitting percentage) while Kaycie Bird picked up 19 assists and Tyler Bradsher 12. Erika Papadeas chipped in three service aces and Cameron Hartson handled a large chunk of the defensive duties with 20 digs. Secord also assisted on seven blocks in the match while Taylor Jones and Markayla Benoit had three apiece.

The Lady Patriots held the Jets to just a .078 hitting percentage on the night and committed only seven attack errors in the three games. It was this masterful use of their offensive opportunities that led to the victory for DBU and moves them three games up in the win column on second place Arkansas Fort-Smith, pending the outcome of the Lions’ match against St. Edward’s Thursday night. Those same Lions will visit Dallas on Saturday, September 22, as DBU looks to distance itself further in the Heartland Conference standings. That match is slated to begin at noon in The Burg Center.
