“This is the hardest working team I have ever coached.” When asked to describe her incoming team, this is how ninth year Head Coach Cathy Kokel explained her 2012 Dallas Baptist Volleyball squad. “The core we have coming back are determined, hard-working, and want to win,” she continued. “I expect great things from this team.” The core she speaks of – Kristin SecordTyler BradsherCameron Hartson, and Krystal Wunderlich – have all started since they were freshmen. Now all juniors and seniors, they are joined by young standouts Kaycie Bird and Erika Papadeas to form the nucleus of a team that will look to improve upon their third place finish in the Heartland Conference last season and vault this DBU program to a new level of success in the coming years.

“I can say with confidence that we will put up a fight against the top-ranked teams we play and if any group of girls is going to take us to the next level, it is this team,” said Kokel. Part of the reason for her optimism is the arrival of junior college transfer Ashley Kay and the return of the veteran Secord for her fifth year of eligibility. “I wasn’t sure if Kristin was going to play or not this year since she had already graduated after missing a season due to injury. But she came to me and said she wanted to finish her career with no regrets and that she loved the sport. We are so blessed that she chose to stay and I expect her to lead this team by playing the best volleyball she has ever played.” Secord, a middle blocker, led the team in blocks per set last season and returns, alongside Wunderlich, as the kill leader in the 2012 lineup.

The Lady Patriots will open the new season in Colorado on August 31 as they take part in the two-day Oredigger Volleyball Classic on the campus of Colorado School of Mines. Their first home action of the year will not happen until September 11 as they take on Heartland Conference foe St. Edward’s at 7:00 pm in The Burg Center.
