The Dallas Baptist Lady Patriot Volleyball Team (3-3) opened Heartland Conference play Thursday night as they matched up against St. Mary’s (2-3) in San Antonio. Kristin Secord and Tadam Mergener helped lead the way for DBU as the Lady Patriots came away with a 3-1 win in a match that did not see any game with tight scoring. Dallas Baptist won the first two games, 25-13 and 25-16, before dropping the third set, 25-14, and winning the decisive set, 25-15.

After opening the season in Colorado against several Top 25 teams, the Lady Patriots have now won two straight contests as they prepare for a trip to Laredo, Texas on Saturday to face Texas A&M International in their second conference match of the young season. Just like Tuesday night’s win against Texas Wesleyan, the tempo Thursday night was set  by Secord as she recorded 18 kills on an astounding .485 hitting percentage. She also picked up six block assists on defense. She was joined by the freshman Mergener who had 11 kills of her own to go along with 12 digs. Tyler Bradsher and Kaycie Bird each chipped in over 20 assists in the match while Cameron Hartson and Erika Papadeas joined Bradsher, Mergener, and Bird in the double-digit dig department.

The Lady Patriots will travel on Friday to Laredo in preparation for their noon start on Saturday against International. With a win, DBU will own a three-game win streak and will climb over the .500 hump for the first time all season. The Lady Patriots will open the home portion of their 2012 season on September 11 as they host conference rival St. Edward’s in the Burg Center at 7:00 pm.
