DBU Volleyball Closes Out Tournament With Win Over Southern Nazarene

DBUPatriots.com – The Lady Patriots took down Southern Nazarene in four sets to end their time at the Tiger Invitational Tournament. DBU split the first two sets with SNU before they were able to take two sets in a row to take the win. This was a good way for the Lady Patriots to bounce back after losing two in a row. In the three sets they won they did a great job in establishing a solid lead and holding onto it throughout. Although the box score may not look too convincing, with Southern Nazarene having more kills, aces, assists, and digs, the Lady Patriots looked more comfortable and played more consistent this time out.

DBU started out strong to start the game. In the first set they were able to take a 9-3 lead on SNU. From there they were able to hold off any attempt of a run by the Storm and got the lead up to 18-10. SNU made things a little interesting by cutting the lead down and only trailing 21-18, but DBU held strong and took the first set 25-21. The Lady Patriots failed to continue their success in the second set. The set started out close with DBU trailing 9-10, but SNU took control with a 22-12 lead that the Lady Patriots couldn’t overcome and SNU took the second set 25-14.

The third set saw DBU look much better. They were able to go out to an early 6-1 lead on the Storm. SNU kept things close and after a balanced game for awhile DBU still led 18-14. From there the Lady Patriots took control scoring four in a row to make it a 22-14 game before finishing the set off 25-18. Leading 2-1, the Lady Patriots were ready to finish off the Storm. The set started out close, but after another four-point swing DBU took a 13-7 lead. SNU did well in climbing back to get the set within one point at 20-19, but the Lady Patriots scored the set’s final five points to win the set 25-19 and the game 3-1.

  • The Lady Patriots continue to look good defensively and ended the game with three more blocks than Southern Nazarene.
  • The team continues to see success when getting off to early leads in their sets. They play much better when they get a lead and just look to hold off a comeback.
  • Kasey Holand ended the game with eight kills and definitely had a great tournament showing this weekend.

“It was nice to end with a good win. We played some good teams, but we were not playing to our potential. When we went into the last match the girls seemed more relaxed and confident. They played solid and hopefully we will get back into rhythm.”

There were five DBU players who ended the game with at least five kills.
10- Katie Nicholson looked good against SNU, ending the game with a team-high 10 kills.
5- Out of the eight team blocks for DBU, Sidnee Jo Fitzpatrick had five of those.

The Lady Patriots will travel to Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday, September 12th before their first home game against Tarleton State on Thursday, September 14th.
