Box Score

Using eight different pitchers on the afternoon, Dallas Baptist (26-10) completed a two-game sweep of Texas Southern (18-19) Wednesday afternoon behind the offense of Austin Elkins and Landon Anderson. Elkins reached base five times in the game, including three hits, and scored three runs while Anderson plated three runs in the contest, two of which came on a two-out triple in the first inning. Stuart Pudenz (5-0)was credited with the win after throwing a scoreless fifth and sixth inning as DBU scored seven runs in those two innings combined to put the game out of reach. Carlos Rossel (0-1) was handed the loss by giving up five earned runs in 1.1 inning of work.

Every batter in the DBU lineup finished the day with a hit except Michael Miller, who was hit by pitch twice on the afternoon. KJ Alexander joined Elkins in the homerun department and six players hit doubles on the day, five of which came in the five-run sixth inning. DBU pitchers allowed eight hits in the game and three of the four runs given up were earned.

Texas Southern scored first off starter Jake Johansen after a leadoff single and an errant pick off attempt in the first inning. But DBU answered with two runs of their own. Elkins walked to lead off and moved to second on a Boomer Collins single. Both would score with two outs as Anderson pounded a ball off the wall in right center for his first triple of the season.

DBU increased their lead in the second on Alexander’s solo homerun only to see the Tigers crawl right back in the game with two runs in the fifth. DBU would get those runs back, however, in the bottom of the inning on a Joel Hutterdouble and would break the game open in the sixth with five runs on a homerun and five doubles. Elkins homered with one out, Ronnie Mitchell doubled to left, Collins doubled down the line, Anderson doubled to right, Duncan McAlpinedoubled to left center, and Jaime Garrido doubled to left and just like that, DBU had opened up a 10-3 lead.

The Tigers would score a single run in the eighth but Patrick Hicks and Blake Webster combined for a scoreless ninth as DBU secured its fifth win in a row heading into Friday’s matchup with Indiana State. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start in Terra Haute with Cy Sneed on the mound for the Patriots. Live audio will be available at dbupatriots.com.
