DBU Stunned for Heartbreaking Loss to SEU, 2-1

The Lady Patriot Soccer Team was defeated by St. Edward’s University in the Heartland Conference Tournament Championship Game on Saturday afternoon by a last  minute goal.

St. Edward’s started the scoring early when Brianna Hinnenkamp pushed a ball pass the DBU defense off an assist by Bethany Bennett.  The score stayed 1-0 until the 74th minute when DBU was awarded a free kick.  DBU senior forward,Brittany Layne struck a perfect ball pass three Hilltopper defenders and the diving Claire Tilton, who was in goal for SEU.

With the game looking like it was heading to overtime, Kelly Servage managed to strike a ball that bounced over DBU’s freshman goalkeeper Kerry Edwards into the back of the net with only 39 seconds left in regulation.  The goal sealed the match and a trip to the 2011 NCAA Championship Tournament for the Hilltoppers.

The Lady Patriots will now await the NCAA Selection Show to see if they will be awarded an at large bid as one of the 48 advancing teams into the 2011 NCAA Championship Tournament.  The selection show is scheduled for Monday, November 7 at 6:00 p.m. CST.  To view the show click here.
