The Dallas Baptist Patriots (13-11, 2-1) did just enough on Sunday afternoon to defeat San Jose State (7-17, 1-2), 6-1, and secure their first-ever Division I conference series victory. The Patriots used homeruns from Duncan McAlpine andMichael Miller to help with the offensive push and five Patriot pitchers stranded 13 Spartan hitters on the afternoon to help DBU to their second win in WAC play. McAlpine recorded the only multi-hit day for DBU and it was his homerun to lead off the second inning that put DBU on the board as starter Cody Beam (2-0) had to pitch around trouble in all four innings that he pitched.

Pitching around trouble was the theme for DBU all afternoon in San Jose. On the day, Patriot hurlers walked nine San Jose batters and hit two more but allowed only three hits on the day, one for extra bases. The sixth inning was the only inning SJSU would score after a leadoff walk issued by reliever Aaron Gilbreath came around to score after a double and a groundout. At the time, that cut the DBU lead to 3-1 after DBU scored one run in the second on the McAlpine blast to the left of the centerfield batter’s eye and two in the third on a couple Spartan errors and a Boomer Collins sacrifice fly. The Patriots would answer the Spartan sixth inning run a couple innings later in the ninth as Michael Wesolowski led off the inning with a walk and scored as the Miller, the next batter, homered on the first pitch saw to deep left field.RJ Talamantes would follow with a hit by pitch, one of two for SJSU pitchers, and later scored on an RBI single to right by McAlpine. That would be all the scoring for either side as Blake WebsterMichael Smith, and Paul Voelker combined for four straight zeroes to finish the game.

The Patriots will return to action on Tuesday as they travel across town to face TCU at Lupton Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm with the Patriot Pregame Show beginning at 6:05 pm with Brendan Smith and Reagan Ratcliff on the call. Fans can listen live on dbupatriots.com/showcase.
