DBU Lady Patriots Soccer Defeats St. Mary’s, 3-0

The Lady Patriot Soccer Team held a 1-0 lead at halftime but the score told only part of the story. DBU forced St. Mary’s Goaltender Paolo Ostos to make 7 saves during the first period after outshooting the Rattlers, 13-1. That offensive pressure continued in the second half as DBU put 7 more shots on goal, scoring on two of them.

Kourtney Edwards opened the scoring for the Lady Patriots just two minutes into the game. She took a pass from Brittany Layne just outside the box and put it past Ostos to give the Lady Patriots a lead they would never relinquish.

In the second half, more offensive pressure from the Lady Patriots led to a St. Mary’s foul just outside the box and Lea Sedwick and Hope Adams combined on a nifty set piece as Sedwick’s one-timer found the back of the net. Stephanie Harrison put the game away for the Lady Patriots in the 65th minute as she capitalized on a Danielle Presley pass to get her free and past the keeper.

Kerry Edwards was asked to make seven saves on the day, all in the second half. Most were harmless shots from distance but she did come up with a big save in the 75th minute as a Rattler forward got behind the defense for a breakaway. Edwards cut down distance and made an outstanding rolling save to perserve the shutout.

The Lady Patriots next play Thursday, October 13, as they take on Newman University in conference play at Lady Patriot Field. Gametime is set for 7:00 pm.
