The Dallas Baptist Lady Patriot Volleyball Team imporved to 11-12 for the season on Saturday afternoon in Wichita, Kansas, where they defeated the Lady Jets from Newman University, 3-1. With the win, DBU improves to 5-4 in Heartland Conference play.
The Lady Patriots jumped out to an early lead over Newman when they took not only the first set (26-24), but also the second set (25-16) to take a commanding 2-0 lead into set three. Set two began with a 10-3 run for DBU that stunned the Lady Jets, as they were only able to come within six points (20-14) of the Lady Patriots for the remainder of the set.
Newman was able to recover in set three as they defeated DBU 25-23 to bring them within one, but the Lady Patriots responded in set four with a 25-21 win to erase any hopes of a Newman comeback. DBU defeats Newman 3-1 to improve to 5-4 in Heartland Conference play to sit tied for fourth in the conference standings.
Senior Claire Stephens finished the match with a team high 15 kills, as she hit for a .480 average. Junior Christina Steinkruger and Sophomore Krystal Wunderlich also finished with impressive performances on the offensive side of the ball as they recorded 11 and 10 kills respectively. Sophomore Tyler Bradsher was instrumental in the win with 38 assists, helping DBU hitters connect for a team total 45 kills.
The Lady Patriots are back in action on Thursday, October 20, as they host Oklahoma Panhandle State University in the Burg Center on the DBU campus. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
