The Lady Patriot Volleyball Team was stunned by Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday night as they were defeated by the Lady Lions, 3-2, in a heart breaking loss which drops their overall season record to 7-11.
Coming off a hard fought weekend where the Lady Patriots were unable to record a win, they traveled to Commerce, Texas, to face the (4-10) Lady Lions from A&M-Commerce to look to break a five game losing streak.
DBU jumped on the Lady Lions quickly, pulling out to a three point lead midway through the first set, 17-14. A&M-Commerce was quick to respond, as they rallied to tie the set, 19-19, before a DBU attack error surrendered the Lady Patriot lead and set to the Lady Lions, as they went on to steal set one, 25-21.
The Lady Patriots evened the score in the second set as they put down four straight points erase the Lady Lion’s lead to end set two and even the match, 1-1, with a victory in set two, 25-17.
DBU was able to capitalize on their improved hitting percentage (.293) in set three as they overpowered the Lady Lion’s defense to gain the lead, 2-1, before moving into set four.
The Lady Lion’s were able to regroup after hitting for a .195 average in set three to rally in set four from an 11-4 deficit to go on a 9-0 run to gain the lead, 13-11, before forcing a fifth and final set with the Lady Patriots, winning set four, 25-22.
The Lady Patriots were unable to fend off a determined A&M-Commerce team, as they were upended in set five, 15-8, as they saw a 5-1 run for the Lady Lions end the match and give them their sixth straight loss to drop their season record to 7-11.
Freshman Erika Papadeas was able to lead the Lady Patriots on the offensive side of the ball as she recorded 17 kills in the loss, hitting to a .225 average. Senior Kristin Secord was close behind with 14 kills on the night.
The Lady Patriots are back in action at home on Thursday, October 6, in The Burg Center as they face the Lady Dustdevils from Texas A&M-International in a Heartland Conference matchup set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
