Dallas Baptist University – The DBU Hockey team opened the year with a sweep of TCU at the StarCenter in Farmers Branch with a 6-5 win on September 1 and a 10-3 victory on September 2. DBU also took down crosstown foe, the University of North Texas, in a 7-4 victory on September 9 to start the year with a 3-0 record.
On September 1st, the Patriots started out hot bursting out with a 2-0 lead until TCU slowly chipped away at the lead and eventually scored three goals in a row to take a 5-3 lead going into the third period. Goals from freshman, Jeremy Fortner and newcomer Spencer Ericksen evened the game at 5-5, with the game-winner coming from freshman Trenton Lee with 0:44 seconds left in the game.
On Friday, the Patriots were played close by TCU until the second period, when DBU erupted for seven unanswered goals, including Elliott Usvolk netting a hat trick. In the net for the first time in a Patriot uniform was freshman Cooper Cothran from Mansfield, Texas, who gave up only three goals in 60 minute. The Patriots outshot TCU 75-21 in the victory, with other goals coming from Brett Stephens, Jeremy Fortner, David Kendall, Spencer Ericksen and Trenton Lee netting 2 goals.
After the sweep of TCU, the Patriots took on crosstown rival UNT in their home opener at the StarCenter in Farmers Branch. DBU started out hot with a 3-0 lead with goals from David Kendall, Elliott Usvolk and Trenton Lee. UNT answered with a couple of goals, but the Patriots struck back quickly with the first collegiate goal from freshman, Matt Birdwell and assistant captain, Patrick Lee, added on two late goals to put the game out of reach.
The Patriots travel to Odessa, Texas, to take on division foe, Texas Tech next weekend.
