The DBU Patriot Cross Country Teams swept the 2011 Heartland Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Laredo, Texas. The championship marked the fifth straight title for the Lady Patriots and the second straight for the Patriot Men’s team.
The Lady Patriots were led by Freshman Kelsey Bruce, who covered the course in 22:40:7, which earned her Heartland Conference MVP, Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year, and a spot on the All-Heartland Conference Team. The Lady Patriots had five runners finish in the Top Ten, including Senior Linet Kibet in 3rd, Freshman Glynnis Meade in 4th, Junior Ashley Spivey in 6th, and Freshman Sarah Rayas in 8th. Freshman Tawnee Wimsatt finished 11th and Sophomore Julie Durrwachter finished 12th to also earn All-Heartland Conference honors. As a team, DBU finished the day well ahead of the pack as they earned 30 more points than the second place finisher, Newman.
The Patriot Men’s Team edged out the Dustdevils from Texas A&M International by just nine points. The Patriots had four runners finish in the Top 10 with their best finish coming from Senior Edwin Kiptoo, who finished in third. Sophomore Joshua Pauley finished 7th, Senior Zach Morgan was 8th, and Sophomore Jacob Phillips was 10th to all earn All-Heartland Conference honors. A trio of Patriots finished in succession to round out the top seven for the Patriot men as Junior Caleb Collins finished just ahead of Freshman Jameson Tomlin and Junior Nic White.
“This was a great day for our program,” said Head Coach Jacob Phillips. “We spoke a lot before these championships about racing as a team and putting team over self and we did that this weekend. We showed today that our strength is in numbers which is exactly what cross country is all about.”
The Patriots will return to action in two weeks at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships hosted by Midwestern State University on Saturday, November 5th.
