DBU Basketball Loses Turnover Battle, Game to SWOSU

If basketball is a game of ball possession and forcing turnovers, it was fitting for the Patriots to lose to Southwest Oklahoma, 85-71, on Monday night in Weatherford, Oklahoma. A big difference in the game might have been the 14 three-point baskets poured in by the Bulldogs but, more likely, it was the 18 turnovers for Dallas Baptist that gave SWOSU that many looks.

DBU scored the first six points of the night to record what would end up being their largest lead of the game. But that lead was quickly erased three minutes in and a see-saw battle ensued – until 6:13 left in the first half when the Bulldogs took control of the game with an 11 point cushion. The Patriots, who shot 51.2% (21 of 41) from the field on the night, tried to climb back in but, ultimately, the turnovers and the Bulldog’s 38.9% (14 of 36) from behind the arc were too much to overcome.

“Southwestern is an excellent team,” said Head Coach Blake Flickner. “They create some difficult matchups and when they are shooting the ball from the outside as well as they were tonight, they are really tough. We were able to get some good shots at the rim and draw some fouls and we shot a good percentage from the field, but this was just their night. Give them credit – they played really well.”

TJ Clark led the Patriots in scoring with 21, including 10 for 13 from the free throw line. Jordan McGowen scored 15 points to go along with six rebounds and Nick Fox picked up a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Overall, DBU shot 27 of 36 (75%) from the foul line and outrebounded the Bulldogs 31-23, including 22 of those rebounds on the defensive end.

Southwest Oklahoma will trade the driving with DBU later this week as they travel to Dallas to take part in the Patriot Thanksgiving Classic beginning Friday afternoon. DBU will square off with Texas A&M Commerce on Friday in the late game while the Bulldogs open the Classic against Arkansas-Fort Smith in the afternoon game. The Patriots will then host a rematch with Southwest at 2:00 pm on Saturday and Commerce and Fort Smith will play the 4:00 pm game.
