DBU Baseball Collects Third Shutout with Win Over UNC-Charlotte

Cy Sneed (4-1) continued his masterful season as he pitched six shutout innings Thursday night against UNC-Charlotte (10-8) before rainful cut his outing short and moved the final three innings of the game to Saturday afternoon. Dallas Baptist (11-6) held on for a 3-0 win after scoring single runs in the fourth, eighth, and ninth innings.

Sneed struck out two and walked one in his six innings (plus one pitch) before Stuart Pudenz started the seventh inning of the game Friday afternoon. Pudenz gave up two hits and walked one but also induced an inning ending double play in the seventh while the score was 1-0. With one out in the eighth, Pudenz handed the ball to Michael Smith who pitched around trouble to record his second save and preserve the team’s third shutout of the season.

Andrew Stevens (3-2) picked up the tough-luck loss for the 49ers as he threw seven complete innings and allowed only one run with six strikeouts. Joel Hutter and Nash Knight both picked up two hits in the game .

The Patriots opened the scoring in the fourth inning as Hutter singled with two outs to score Ryan Behmanesh, who was hit by a pitch with one out. In the eighth, the following day, Boomer Collins doubled down the left field line to scoreAustin Elkins and the Patriots added an insurance run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Elkins to score Knight.

Smith walked two in his 1.2 innings but allowed no hits and no runs as the Patriot pitching staff recorded their third shutout in their last five contests. Game 2 of the series will follow this afternoon’s contest with Game 3 set to be played Saturday afternoon.
