DBU Advances to Heartland Championship with 4-0 Win

The Dallas Baptist Patriot Women’s Soccer Team advanced to the championship of the Heartland Conference Tournament, with a 4-0 win over Texas A&M International University, Thursday afternoon in Austin.

The Patriots (17-2-0) will now play, Saturday at 12 p.m., looking to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, challenging the winner of Thursday’s second game, St. Edward’s University versus St. Mary’s University.

Danielle Presley, recently named Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Year, was the leading scorer for the Patriots in Thursday’s contest, scoring a pair of goals, including the game’s first score, off an assist from Ashley Cox in the 12th minute.

Cox was the next Patriot scorer, knocking in a Lea Sedwick shot that hit the post, her eighth goal of the season. Sedwick was credited with an assist.

Kelsey Hall moved the Patriots ahead 3-0 with an unassisted goal in the 65th minute, followed six minutes later by Presley’s second score, her 18th of the season.

Kerry Edwards (17-2-0) earned the shutout in goal, her 10th of the season, recording four saves. The Patriots tallied 17 total shots, five on goal, compared to 10 total shots, four on goal, for Texas A&M International (11-8-1).

Aissa Pedraza allowed the first two goals for the Dustdevils, before being lifted for Katelin Jennings, who also allowed a pair of goals, registering one save. Pedraza is credited with the loss, falling to 9-6-0.

The red-hot Patriots have now won 13 straight games, heading into Saturday’s championship. The No.9 DBU women swept the season series with St. Mary’s, winning both contests 2-0. The Patriots split with fifth-ranked St. Edward’s, bouncing back from a 5-1 loss in Austin to defeat the Hilltoppers, 2-1 in Dallas.
