Dallas Baptist’s Boomer Collins was named All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association on Wednesday and was joined by teammates Joel Hutter and Austin Elkins as All-Midwest Region honorees. This is Collins’ second All-American honor as he was also named such by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association last week. He will seek to be a consensus All-American if placed on the team later this month when Baseball America revels their award winners. With three players on the All-Region 1st Team, DBU joins one other school in the Midwest Region to top the list with a trio of names.

Collins hit .374 with 13 homeruns while starting all 60 games for the Patriots in 2012, including all four in the NCAA Waco Regional. His 58 RBI placed him second on the team behind Hutter while his 15 stolen bases tied him for the top spot on the squad alongside Landon Anderson. Collins, a redshirt junior, also led the team by a wide margin with 23 doubles.

Hutter, who was drafted and signed with the Baltimore Orioles in the 10th Round of this year’s MLB First Year Player Draft, batted .338 with 11 homeruns and a club-leading 72 RBI, which tied him for fifth most in Division I Baseball. He also slugged 16 doubles and stole eight bases.

Elkins, a 19th round draft pick of the Houston Astros, finished the year with a .344 average and nine homeruns. The junior also had 14 doubles and led the team with eight triples, which tied him for 10th amongst the national leaders. He also averaged over one run scored per game which placed him in the Top Twenty in Division I Baseball.

The Patriots finished 2012 with a 41-19 record, their second straight season of 40+ wins, and an at-large berth to the NCAA Regional Tournament as a #2 seed in the Waco Regional. After playing the last 10 seasons as an NCAA Independent, Dallas Baptist will join the Western Athletic Conference in 2013 for baseball and will open the season in a state of the art ballpark to be completed by Opening Day 2013.
