Duncanville ISD teachers enjoy the summer break as much as students, but some have put in many extra hours this year to improve their skills. In fact, two of our teachers were asked to share their expertise with colleagues from across the state.

Duncanville HS band directors David Brandon and Will Pitts both presented clinics at the annual Texas Bandmasters Association (TBA) Convention in San Antonio July 20-23. Brandon’s clinic ‘How to get “That” Sound’ was based on the development of playing fundamentals in concert band. Will Pitts’s clinic was entitled ‘Creating a Culture of Success as a Young Teacher’. Since Pitts has just completed his second year as a Duncanville band director, his insight was very useful for teachers just beginning their careers in music instruction. Duncanville middle school band directors Kevin Graham, Mark Schroeder, Jed Maus, Brittney Cook, Kenneth Thompson, and Michelle Hanegan also assisted at this convention, serving as clinic monitors.

Prestigious music education associations like the TBA and TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association) have recognized the expertise of Duncanville ISD’s staff for over 30 years, inviting them to speak to fellow teachers. Band directors also benefit by acquiring new material they’re excited to share with their students, including the history of Texas band, conducting, marching band techniques, and strategies and music interpretation.
