Acton Offers Fun for the Whole Family

At Acton Elementary, education involves not only the mind, but the body as well. The school is teaching its students Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, and Habit #7 is “Sharpen the Saw.” That means taking care of the body by eating right, exercising, getting enough sleep, and spending time with family and friends. For this reason, Acton organized an entire day focused on health and wellness on April 27.

The day started with a visit from Smile Programs, the mobile dentists. Several students received x-rays, cleanings, fluoride, sealants, and simple restorative procedures at no cost, thanks to grants, Medicaid, CHIP, and private insurance. “We know how important taking care of children’s teeth is to keeping them healthy,” said first grade teacher Elizabeth Hunter. Students were also invited to a pep rally where Duncanville High School athletes spoke about the importance of exercising and maintaining good grades.

But Acton’s health and wellness day didn’t end when school let out – Hunter and three other teachers organized a Family Fun Fitness Night as part of their education administration classes at UNT Dallas. “One of our course objectives is to collaborate with families and other community members,” Hunter explained. “We organized this event because we wanted to show our students and parents how important it is to sharpen the saw. We wanted to promote a healthy lifestyle by showing parents healthy alternatives for snacks and easy ways that they can incorporate daily exercise in their lives.”

The evening’s activities included Zumba, Xbox Kinect dance workouts, aerobics, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and football. Health information sessions were also held regarding diabetes, weight management, and stroke awareness. Several Acton staff members conducted healthy snack cooking demonstrations, and a certified cosmetologist provided Aveda facials and massages. An estimated 100 families participated, and the school plans to make this an annual event. You can view photos from Acton’s Family Fun Fitness festivities in the gallery above.
