The Dallas Baptist Patriots (18-14) opened the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament Wednesday morning with a loss, 63-58, to Hope International. Nick Fox led the way for DBU in the losing effort with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Jordan McGowen had 16 points and Armie Lewis contributed 10.
Poor shooting from the Patriots (29% from the field) moves them to the consolation bracket of the tournament and eliminates their opportunity to defend their NCCAA National Championship from a year ago. HIU took a 15 point lead with 4:30 left to play in the first half as the Patriots could only manage 19 points in the first 15:30 of play. They did, however, make an 11-1 run to end the half and cut the defecit to five at 35-30.
The Patriots took the lead at 39-37 as Fox scored nine straight points, the last coming at the 16:09 mark. HIU regained the lead with just over thirteen minutes to play and DBU was never able to get back in front from there. The deficit would never get to more than five the rest of the game but the poor shooting from the field would not allow the Patriots to ever get enough momentum to win the game.
DBU awaits their opponent for the second round consolation bracket and will play at a time to be determined on Thursday.
