Student Council to Raise Funds for Wildfire Relief

You may have seen reports of the widespread destruction as a result of wildfires in Bastrop, Texas. It’s estimated that more than 1,500 homes were destroyed and tens of thousands of acres burned.

Staff and students at Bastrop High School were just some of those affected by the blaze. That’s why Student Councils around Texas are chipping in to collect donations.

The DHS Student Council is asking for Wal-Mart gift cards or the money to purchase some.

“We collected monetary donations during lunches last week, and will continue to do so for the next couple of weeks,” explained Student Council Advisor David Womack. “I also took several bags of clothing and backpacks to Austin last weekend.”

Bastrop officials say they are currently overwhelmed with clothing, and that disaster victims are in need of gift cards to buy essentials like toiletries, kitchen utensils, etc.

“We just want to help as best we can,” added Womack. “We’ve already collected enough money to purchase eight gift cards. We want to help because we know that a disaster could happen to us sometime.”
