24th Annual Ducanville Great American Shootout Set for July 19-22

Duncanville, and the Best Southwest area will be the hot bed for boy’s basketball in mid July.

Over 300 teams are signed up for the tournament, and the NBA and NCAA divisions are completely full and the tournament is accepting teams for a standby list.

The Great American Shootout’s NBA and NCAA divisions are set to play at the Duncanville Fieldhouse, Duncanville High School, and Kennemer Middle School in Duncanville. Games will also be played at Cedar Hill High School, Desoto High School, DeSoto’s Coleman Middle School, and McGowan Middle School in Glen Heights.

Teams currently slated to participate in this area are from Texas, Colorado, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.

The NIT division will be played in the northern Dallas area at the Integrated Athletic Development complex and Hebron High School in Carrollton, and Lewisville High School.

Area hotels listed on the tournament website are the Holiday Inn Express, Hilton Garden Inn Dallas/Duncanville, Best Western Plus, TownePlace Suite by Marriott Dallas/DeSoto, and the MCM Grande FUNDome in DeSoto.

Teams are comprised of players with high school elegibility remaining, and unsigned seniors from the class of 2012.Players who have signed a Leter of Intent (scholarship papers) with a college at any level to play college basketball during the 2012-2013 season are not eligible to participate.

In 2011, 312 teams participated in the tournament, and 400 college coaches attended.

According to a study done by Best Western Plus General Manager Pankaj Lad, the tournament has a tremendous impact on the area.

According to Lad’s study, the “sit-down” restaurants in the area saw about a 15% increase in business during the 2011 tournament, when compared to their usual traffic. Both Subway and Pappadeaux increased their labor during the tournament due to the demand. Subway increased labor by 10% and Pappadeaux increased by 191 hours over the three day period.

Allen Conley, owner of the Subway location directly across the highway from the Duncanville Fieldhouse, was specifically identified in the report. His location saw the highest weekly sales in the 3-year history of the store, in fact sales were up 51% when compared to the same weekend in 2010. Conley also stated that there is a significant difference in business between locally run tournaments, and those with “named” sponsors, such as “The Great American Shootout.”

The study also showed that hotels in the entire Best Southwest area were sold out on July 8 and 9, the dates of last year’s tournament. Total revenue for the hotels in the area topped $60,000 for the weekend, and teams were sent to hotels in downtown Dallas due to the lack of rooms in the area.

One of the most surprising details listed private jets utilizing Dallas Executive Airport for the tournament. In 2010 over 40 private jets flew in for the event. Those flying in included NCAA recruiters, scouts, and coaches looking for talent. Lad reported in the June 28 City Council meeting that the airport reported that during the 2011 tournament the airport saw a 35% increase in air traffic that was directly attributable to the Great American Shootout.

The tournament website also lists Texas players that have or had extended NBA careers who played in the Great American Shootout. Included in the list is Duncanville’s Greg Ostertag. Also on the list are: Kenyon Martin (#1 overall pick), Deron Williams, Chris Bosh, Emeka Okafor (#2 overall pick), Rashard Lewis, LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Jordan, Kendrick Perkins, Stephen Jackson, Chris Mihm, Darrell Arthur, Desmond Mason, Brian Skinner, Jake Voskuhl, Tony Battie, and Jeryl Sasser.

These are the teams listed for the Duncanville area as of July 6, 2012.
