The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Basketball Team opened the 2011-2012 regular season on Friday in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, at the South Central Shootout against #4 ranked Lions from Missouri Southern University. The Patriots suffered their first loss of the season as the Lions were able defeat DBU, 106-73.
The Patriots (0-1) started out strong, holding a 25-22 lead with 7:49 left in the first half before a 16-0 run by the Lions (1-0) forced DBU back on their heels. Missouri Southern was able to take advantage of outstanding play from Jason Adams to finished out the first half on a 29-8 run to lead 51-33 over DBU. Adams finished the first half with 27 points for the Lions.
The Lions would not be stopped in the second half as they led 87-63 with 7:38 to go. The Patriots continued to fight, but were unable to stop MSSU as the Lions were able to shoot 67.2 percent from the field.
The Patriots were led on the offensive side of the ball by Junior Nick Fox with 18 points, connecting on 6 from 11 from the field and a perfect 4 for 4 from the charity stripe. Senior Jordan McGowen finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Ryan Marsh also finished with double digit points (14), draining 5 of 8 from the field three free throws, and one three point shot.
“Missouri Southern is an excellent team and they showed today why they are ranked #4 in the country. Keane Thomann and Jason Adams are special players and they showed their talents today. Our guys played hard and unselfish, and this was a game we will be able to learn a lot from. Several of our young guys were able to play in a good game against a tough team. That will help them grow up fast,” said Head Coach Blake Flickner about the loss.
The Patriots are back in action on tomorrow as they face Southern Arkansas University in the second game of the South Central Shootout in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
