The 2012 NCAA Division I College Baseball Season will kick off Friday around the country as teams begin their 56-game regular season trek toward Omaha and the College World Series. In 2011, the Dallas Baptist Patriots were two wins away from that destination but begin 2012 with an untested starting rotation, a new guy in the back of the bullpen, and basically 67% of last year’s offense returning. But that’s no deterrent for these Patriots. In fact, it is something they relish and a challenge they look forward to as they begin their season against Southeast Missouri at home on Friday.

With the loss of Brandon Williamson, Jared Stafford, and Chris Haney from the pitching staff – and Jason Krizan, Tyler Robbins, and Josh Wilson from the lineup – DBU must replace almost half its innings from last year, 52% of its wins, 94% of its saves, and 33% of its offense. They will do that with a redshirt sophomore, a freshman, and a senior on the mound (Jake JohansenCy Sneed and Taylor Massey, respectively) and a bullpen that will be the strength of the team.Duncan McAlpineJoel HutterAustin Elkins, and Landon Anderson return to anchor the lineup and the middle of the field while Boomer Collins will join Anderson in the outfield as his year-in-residence has been satisfied which allows him to play after transferring in the fall of 2010. The Patriots will look to increase the program streak of winning seasons to 34 and will do so with defense, solid pitching, and by continuing the production that has established DBU as one of the top offensive programs in the country.

Ranked #33 in the pre-season, DBU has added several components off the field to increase the experience and exposure for fans of Patriot Baseball. Reagan Ratcliff and Brendan Smith will call the action for 46 of 56 games this regular season as games are broadcast via the internet and archived for those who were not able to listen live. Fans can also follow DBU Baseball on Twitter @DBU_Baseball for the latest news and information regarding the Patriots.

The first road games for DBU will take place the week after Opening Day as they travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma on Tuesday to face Oklahoma State with Aaron Gilbreath on the mound and the road swing will continue Friday through Sunday as the Patriots take on the #6 Rice Owls in Houston. DBU will then return home for a four-game homestand before traveling to Austin to face off against #5 Texas.

The 2012 season will be the final season for Dallas Baptist as an NCAA Independent. In 2013, the Patriots will join the WAC alongside UTA, Texas State, UT-San Antonio, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, Seattle, Cal State Bakersfield, Sacramento State, and San Jose State.
